Hey everyone. I did write to Channel 4 and they've told me to contact the production company, so I am still waiting for them. They'll be the ones with the links to family as well I think. But if Channel 4 does have some kind of social corporate responsibility charity set up, that'd be great. Please do keep this up though, as it's easy to let it slide. I only joined the forum just to see if we could get it moving!

C4 Editor. Well I've watched your film now and I can understand why so many hearts were affected, but you've left your audience out on a limb here. Surely you must have anticipated the shock reaction that this documentary would evoke. We have seen this type of 'groundswell of emotion' in many instances since John Pilger's report on the tragedies in Biafra (Nigeria), when many people pledged aid over the telephone to relieve the suffering there (but that was ITV wasn't it?). If you are 'stuck' on how to make a 'connection' in China I would suggest contact with the Red Cross in China, as they seem to be able to do many things in most places that other organisations can't do. Here's a URL (link) to their English index page (home page) where you can make other 'contact' links, but beware, your browser may do 'odd' things like requesting a download of 'other' character sets. Don't download them, just 'cancel'!! http://www.redcross.org.cn/english/index.htmAgain, I don't know why you didn't plan for this response as an outcome of the doc. It really is heart rending when you realise that this guy's parents were supposedly limited to the amount of offspring that they can generate, quite apart from his own obvious physical suffering he also needs to provide for his parents. These are but a few of many issues that need to be recognised as 'differences in culture'. Best regards, suricat.

I have to admit that I haven't read all the posts on this so sorry if this is repeating a question. Are you doing a follow up to this or should we expect that, having whipped up interest we will be left in the dark as to what happened next and be left feeling very let down by C4? Too many programmes of late have massive build up to them and then leave you feeling up in the air almost abandoned by the lack of "seeing it through to it's conclusion"

Maybe the solution to help Huang is to bring him over here .A collection could be held.. C4 to run it maybe and we could then pay for private care .He could then be sent home with all the pain killers and antibiotics he needs, I wish the members of this forum could get together tell each other who we really are and give out contact numbers .I recon together we could get things moving there must be a good leader among us, but we cant so we look to you at C4 to tell us what we can do . This need doing now Huang and his family are suffering . I know i am like a dog with a bone wont let go

Update on the production company. I rang them today and they've said they've been inudated with responses from people. They said they're definately going to set something up, but are just thinking about what and how to do it. they've got my contact details and have said that they'll get in contact once they've made a decision. Otherwise, if people want to be updated, I'll do it here or on my facebook group.

Hello all, Some news…
I’ve heard from the director of I am the Elephant Man. Having read all your comments here, he said the following:
"I am really moved by the excellent response to Huang's story, it was a tremendously humbling experience working with him, and helping him to tell his story. The programme ended where it did because that's when we stopped filming (5 weeks ago). Huang had come home. His quality of life, as he said, was greatly improved, but he now he has to wait for the next stage of surgery. Professor Xu at FUDA Cancer hospital has promised to give Huang further treatment, namely another operation to remove the tumour on the left side of his face, and then a course of plastic surgery to help Huang achieve his wish: to appear normal. I'm particularly touched that some viewers have felt they want to donate money to help Huang and his family. The great tragedy is that Huang has been denied medical treatment most of his life, due to his poverty, and the lack of medical resources in Hunan province. The welfare state collapsed in the early 80s as China embraced free enterprise and the 'open door' policy, and the rural poor have really been left behind by the economic boom in the cities. I would be delighted to return to China to follow-up Huang's story. It's a story that's particularly close to me now, having followed his journey so far, I'm as keen as everyone else to see how it ends. Thanks, Carl Hindmarch"
Talking of donations…
Unfortunately Channel 4 cannot receive monies or coordinate donations for any of our programme contributors. However we are investigating ways you may be able to help with the production company and will keep you updated.
I hope that helps. Thanks for all your comments and your patience. I’ll be back when I know more.
Cheers.

I strongly believe that animals have right and that's why I was so negative about the pig. I am going to pass my beliefs this time though because the programme was very touching and a bit of an eye-opener to what's going on in the world around you. It was a sad story and a shame that it had to end so suddenly. It would be great if channel 4 could continue to update us on what's happening, like so many people have mentioned, and that there's a way that we can help.

Dear Web Editor,
Many thanks indeed for your post and the enquiries you have made. It will be excellent if there could be liaison with the production company, as you suggest, to try to help Huang in some way.
Dear hoangiuk - thank you for being so proactive. Are we permitted to share e-mail addresses in this forum? There seems to be a number of contributors who are keen to help, and presumably even more people who have contacted the production company independently from the forum.
Fingers crossed.
So sad to hear about Huang's historical medical neglect, and the reasons for it.

Personally, I would advise against this. Unless you receive a contact mail that you are absolutely sure is from the C4 team, don't do it. Best regards, suricat.

Everyone.
If anyone wants to make any 'positive' contact with C4 or a member of the C4 community I would strongly suggest that you make the 'first contact'! That way you should be more certain of the individual, or group, that you are in contact with! There is a link at the top of the main Science Forum page, or you can use this link. chat@channel4.com
Best regards, suricat.

Great to see people being so positive about providing support to Huang and his family. The beauty of this documentary is that it has raised awareness to such a degree it provoked a massive response from people who want to be more than passive viewers. Fingers crossed someone will find a way to enable us to contribute effectively. We will have to watch this space for further updates. MadKitten - this is for you > since you have nothing but positive comments for everyone's posts.

Suricat is correct to put you off sharing contact details.
In fact, the moderators try to remove any kind of personal contact information. This is for you own safety, the reason being that while you may think you know the people you are chatting to on the forum, you won’t know the many thousands of casual guests who wander the forums and can read what you post.
Also under privacy rules Channel 4 are not allowed to give out other users information, so even if you email chat@channel4.com requesting it, much as they’d love to help they aren’t allowed to.
Sorry if that makes me sound like a killjoy.

Hi Everyone, Someone has passed on a link to me to the hospital that Huang had his operation in where money can be donated. At the moment, without it being officially cleared by the production company, I'm reluctant to share it.

Hi everyone. Just letting you know that I got in contact with the hospital that treated Huang with regards to donations and they got back to me saying they have a special link on their website where you can donate money just for Huang. They then emailed me again saying a charity is currently being set up so donations can be made to that.
Hope this info is of use. The story of Huang really touched my heart, as I'm sure it did for many of you as well.
