they turn them into stuff instead of using more oil to make stuff...?
I know it would be better if we just stopped using plastics altogether, or found a way to recycle them ourselves, but if China is willing to do it for us, is that really so bad?
Seskinreay quoth: Lucibee, this is presumably to discourage the packaging?
Sorry, what is to discourage the packaging?
I'm probably being a bit thick but I don't see what it is our sending unrecyclable plastics to China solves.
It solves the problem for us of what to do with the mountains of plastics we wish to discard, by shipping them away to become someone else's problem.
For the Chinese, it provides 'employment' in the incineration and/or recovery of plastic materials, which in turn produces an unbelievable toxic and life-threatening atmosphere for them to work in, for extremely low pay. An extremely elegant solution for us.
If these plastics were in fact re-processed in the West, with the appropriate new techologies, the dangers would be much decreased.
I don't know what I've done to merit a blush on the cheek of a peerless flower, but I'm grateful for it. (This is, of course, hoping that it isn't a flush of rage at yet another intrusion).
Is a Green Life worth living?
I would say yes, if by a 'Green Life' the person who posed the question meant:- Trying earnestly not to be wasteful, of energy, resources etc.,; Trying to live as sustainably as is possible in the modern world; trying to have respect for the other creatures which inhabit the planet and to learn from them; Admitting to ourselves that it is we who are dependent on animals (including insects) for our survival. Animals require nothing more from mankind but to be left alone in order to thrive, the reverse however is not true. We depend on them for food, for ornament, for quack medicine - sometimes, simply for status!
The generator of this thread, and people who generally attack 'greeny' ideas, accuse people who want to live less wastefully and more in tune with nature, as desiring the end of civilization and a return to life in caves with clothes made of camel shit and bus tickets. Calm down lads, there is actually a happy medium. DON'T waste electricity; DEMAND less stupid packaging; USE more public transport; LOBBY your public reps. for legislation REQUIRING upgrading of the infrastructure governing provison of water and sanitation, waste disposal, and emissions from industrial processes. None of these things mean having to do without your TV, your blackberry or any of the other toys that make you happy. PAY a bit more for that 'right on T Shirt' so that the child who sewed it can be paid more than 6 cents a day. STOP expecting dirt cheap grub - and then complaining when it turns out that there's something wrong with it. Producers deserve proper payment for feeding the rest of us.
this list could be a thread on its own:Hows about using our legs more for transport & not fighting so many Wars(each country could have a War quota and they could trade War bonds on the Stock Exchange TM)
I'd like to use my signature to remind everyone that at this time of year there will be a lot of toads crossing the roads so be careful when you're driving, especially at night. Thank you
The only good thing about living a green life would be avoiding the taxes that the government is bringing in to take money of people who are just enjoying themselves.
Anarchy! Thats the answer, everyman for his self, bring down the government and all that. Arm the masses, lets fight it out!!!!

I quite like all the protests and stuff; I obviously don't take part, but I can see that it does give women with 'sensible shoes' an excuse to have a camping trip!

What's going on here? Looks like throws of "Les Misserable"!
You do realise that after the anarchy you'll all need to form a government that'll do exactly the same things all over again (I know, but this time it'll be you doing it).

Dahlings I'm terribly serious and sciency, but I heartily approve of wind up fun machines for the populus. Just think - one minute of cranking gets you forty minutes of fun!

Sheik, your right on the money in my book, including the wind up stuff.
On another subject, what do we think of the idea of carpeting the country with Wind Farms?
For those interested Ive just been tipped off with this:
30 Aug, Thursday, BBC Radio 4
9.00 p.m. FM only
First of a 6 part series - "Costing the Earth"
(repeated Friday 31st 3.00 in afternoon )
The Wind Rush Generation
With energy companies battling to secure sites for wind turbines, Miriam O'Reilly investigates claims that many of them are already underperforming.
She asks whether the public have been misled, and if they should be subsidising a still unreliable source of energy.
Well, James Lovelock has been warning of the unreliability of wind power for years. I think they should be building more nuclear power stations instead. However, they seem to be decommissioning them rather than building new ones. Or maybe a fleet of nuclear subs that can be plugged at the various docks around the country. I forget how many homes a nuclear sub can power, but it's a lot...
