Hi all, i just watched the new Men in white episode and in it, they made a car give off a chemical that smelt like rotting fish (and was created when fish rot) Did anyone get the name of this chemical as i am quite eager to get my hands on some (for obious reasons ). If not ill jsut have to purswade my collage chemistry proffessor to help make some.
Hello Eddie, The smelly chemicals produced by bacteria in rotting fish are putrescine, cadaverine and trimethyl amide. We extracted these by distilling the rotting fish using a suitable solvent (ethanol) and the usual condensing tube etc. Have fun. Basil
Wait! THE Dr Basil ! hello there! Thanks for that, ill see if i can 'borrow' a leibig (if thats spelt right) condencer thingy and a large beaker of enthanol from me Proffessor. Probably have to do it outside : / yea? I got an aim to make the worlds greatest stink bomb, coz ur matey looked like he was enjoying himself when he sniffed it.
BTW Great show, u guys are doing a great job of making science funny and showing people that all scientists are not balding old men that do slideshows in the lecture hall and memorise various substance's atomic weights in their spare time... Gota do a second series yea?
hi! yeah, you defn wanna do that outside!! it'll make you wretch big-time! FYI, i DO actually memorise the periodic table in my spare time. Dunno about second series. I so hope so! Cheers, Basil

Have done my bit and sent a message to viewer enquiries. Even got a reply, saying 'glad you enjoyed it. I have passed your message on". To whom, it didn't say, but it's a start.
