Sarahbbb: You certainly seem to have recovered well from your trials earlier in your life. I wish you all the very best in your education. As a teacher I am dismayed that you believe nobody tried to help you during your school years. Working in a large comprehensive I have experience of teaching many young people from disadvantaged backgrounds not dissimilar to your own. Our Guidance system tries hard to help young people settle in school and to deal with problems which are not school-related. Sometimes we see success as pupils are turned around and motivated to study and try to reach a better level of undersatnding and education. Very often the problem lies with poor family interest where, perhaps, both parents are unemployed and education is not seen as an aid to finding employment. Often school is seen as an interruption to other duties which the parent(s) wish the child to perform, e.g. looking after younger siblings or after the parents themselves. I know of at least one girl who never attended school but waited hand and foot on her mother. Most teachers I know do try to understand and use strategies to win over pupils who have problems. Sometimes however, no matter how hard you try, kids just want to rebel against what life has thrown at them and this is often manifested in disruptive behaviour at school. I sincerely hope that all goes well with you in the future.
