It was only a small minority of kids who got the cane (3 whacks across the bum usually !) for things like bullying, fighting & stealing. Hopefully that isn't a problem at your school. Times have obviously changed but maybe the cane would be better than suspensions for things like that ? What do you think ?
i think some teachers would use it for tiny things , others only as a last resort . so it would be inconsistant . also if you did something that affected the teacher , they may strike as in revenge . i think a adult is defnatly stronger than a child . i think that hitting straight out is stupid when whatever the kid did could have been an acident , who knows , not you your busy punishing them already . and i think it did not work back in the day either . is it for pain or embarrasement .
there are other ways to embarase someone , so must be pain . thus saying if someone does something wrong hitting them is correct .
Sometimes Violence is needed, sometimes little swines need the cane to be taught a lesson, they need physical pain.
Now it doesnt exist, the kids are running riot, the proof is there, its fact.
I am not a violent person either, though I would be towards you.
so you would be violent towards me, would you, floony? that seems to be at odds with your protestation of non-violence.
Rasberryripple i had several strokes of the cane at school just for silly things such as handing in homework late....it was very painful. Nowadays kids are getting away with what ever they want too. Instead of going back to thrash happy teachers for silly little crimes do you not feel it would be good for society as a whole to cane school kids that are in to whickedcrimes such as bullying, violence and stealing. It is often reported that some kids try to take their own lives due to being bullied as teachers are powerless to do anything. Do you not feel that in these instances the bullies should be given a thrashing?
jumbo jimbo.
when i was at school i too was beaten with the cane and the trainer for minor infringements of the school rules. did it make me a better person? did it make me more disiplined? no, to both of those questions. what did keep me on the straight and narrow was the love of a good family. being taught what was right and what was wrong. do you really think that thrashing someone for things such as bullying, violence and stealing is really going to stop that person from doing those things? we do agree that no child shoud be driven to taking there own lives because what is done to them. but again, do you think that thrashing anyone is going to change the way that person is going to behave? bullies should be severely dealt with, on that we both agree, again. i certainly don't have an answer as to what is the correct way to go about it but beating someone only makes that person more anti-social in my experience.

Yes but do you not feel that kids nowadays do as they please there have regularly been reports of kids causing heatattacks or beating up old men/women. For terrible crimes such as these surely they deserve a thrahing. When i was at school it seemed silly that a rule broken seemed to result in the slipper/cane. Even back then i was always glad when a bully or a theif got a severe thrashing and i feel it is for kids such as these that it should be brought back for.

I don't supose you have ever been threatend before out in the streets or been in a rowdy class at school. The teachers have no control over the childen and much of it is to do with regulations that are suposidly there to protect the children which in effect takes power and control away from the teacher. Because the teacher is powerless to take action against trouble children the situation becomes worse and the children in that class don't get a good education if the situation was controlable. Everybody loses.
Bring back the cane!
ah, RT. don't assume that because we have "chatted" a few times that you know my life story. the answer to both your points is yes. when i was at school, which is quite a while back now, we too had disruptive pupils and the teachers had the powers to use the cane. did it make a difference? NO. the more they where hit the worse it made them the next time. what to do? well i certainly think the school should have more powers to remove violent or disruptive pupils from their envoirenment. no one should have to put up with any form of violence perpetrated aginst themselves. it's just that i don't think that violence by a teacher on a child is acceptable. just as i don't think that violence perpetrated on a teacher by a pupil is acceptable either. there has to be another way.
I wouldn't say we have chatted atall, It has been more confrontational than that wouldn't you say? Also I never claimed I knew your life story, I just went by what you previously posted so did the other posters.
I also suspect the only reason you have got involved in this discussion is because I posted in this thread, the same goes for other areas of the forum.
I am just being observational here, please feel free to correct me as you often do to EVERY single post I make.

there have always been disruptive pupils. there have always been young people who have been violent towards other people, young and old. as for thrashing them, no i don't agree. there has to be another way. the more you hit someone the more anti-socilal they become. who decides which kids should be thrashed? is it the teacher? i have had teachers that have disliked me beacuse of who i am. could those teachers have been given the power to thrash me on some lame excuse?

no, not confrontational, surely. don't flatter youself RT. you just happen to be where i end up. not every single post, either. well if you're an observer. observe then don't post then.

Alley Cat
At my school only the headmaster and a few of the senior teachers were allowed to use the cane. All a junior teacher could do was sent you to the head master for him to deal with you. I don't think anyone ever got the cane for trivial things and, of course, other punishments like detentions were used as well. I should think at least 90% of the kids (me included) were never caned. We didn't live in fear all the time. I think the main purpose of the cane was a deterrent and to punish really bad behaviour. Although of course it wouldn't be much of a deterrent if it wasn't used occasionally - and yes it did hurt ! At least up to a point I think it did deter bad behaviour as I think, by and large, the kids did respect the teachers and I don't remember any kid ever swearing at a teacher or really defying them. Of course its impossible to say if behaviour would have been worse without the cane but I think it might have been. I understand your point about giving the wrong message that its all right to hit people. One example - about 5 or 6 kids were caught shoplifting once. They all got 3 strokes of the cane across their back sides. Maybe that was more effective than involving the police, social workers, expelling them from school and all the rest of it. I can't remember any of them misbehaving again.
My husband got the cane a his school (frequently) and ended up beintg expelled without being able to do his exams...it was no deterrent him him whatsoever...
At my school there was no corporal punishment but the threat of a letter home was usally enough to get the vast majority of kids into line...
yes but this is now surely a question of how hard a child is hit as at some schools hit harder than others in which case no one would want to be caned again
I am a teacher and of the kids in my school that would get the cane if it was allowed I don;t think it would make a difference to any of them! They misbehave to get noticed, no punishment will stop that! The kids who might get the cane once or twice are the sort that respond well to non physical punishment anyway (ie they have a conscience and feel bad about what they have done) What works best is taking notice of the kids when they do what they are supposed to be doing, it gives them a reason to behave well and they lose out when they misbehave. Call me a hippy but I think thats a nicer (and a more effective) way to deal with things.
I don't know its an impossible choice, i'll just have to hope that when I flip the coin it somehow explodes and kills me.
