I don't want to get into heated debate again but I still feel that there is no case to answer as far as her parents are concerned. The very fact that they have kept this whole thing going does not make sense if they needed it all forgotten.

you have a gut instinct the McCann's are good. My observations were the McCann's apparent lack of emotion. You explained to me that medical professionals can appear cold due to their training and work. I accepted this and it seemed to make sense.....maybe! I did worry as two of my daughters are Doctors who are full of emotion! (one is a cardio-thoracic surgeon and still shows immense upset at times)
I remember you said that if the McCann's were implicated in Maddie's disappearance then you would eat your computer.....or something like that. I hope you are wrong.

Kate McCann will today be declared a "formal suspect" by the Portuguese police. Remember, their procedures and laws relating to investigations etc. are different.
So do I MW! My monitor is looking pretty unappetizing!! I know that the sensationalists are trying to make a big deal over the amount of time that Kate was interviewed yesterday but with translation I do not think it is out of the way. I used to live in Saudi and know from painful experience how difficult a process that can be! They also keep repeating that she is being interviewed as a witness. With so little to go on after so long, I am afraid that everything that happens is going to be magnified and examined with fervour.
I am sure that your daughters, while retaining their natural compassion are nothing but collected, reassuring and professional in front of their patients! You must be one very proud mum!

Yes I heard that later, but more bizarre is the fact that my post which followed on immediately from my first post, as I heard the news saying that - despite the fact that Kate is being declared a suspect, I was not swayed from my opinion - has been deleted! What on earth is going on?

ITV has dropped the abysmal Antony Cotton Show in order to cover this story - which has been covered elsewhere throughout the day, and no doubt will be covered again by ITN at 6.30 in its usual bulletin. And then, in the same spirit of urgency, compassion and sobriety, it is showing a repeat of Dale Winton's Supermarket Sweep. Ratings or morality? I know what I think their motivation is. What a pathetic channel ITV is.
Once this is over I think it is important that the media's role is examined. People have been cynically lied to throughout by press and TV journalists.

Dunno Roth, but I am still sticking to my feeling that they are innocent. I don't claim to know how the Portuguese or any other police force works, but it all whiffs of desperation on the part of the Portuguese police to be seen to produce something.
One thing that just does not add up for me are the blood stains in the hire car not hired until 3 weeks after Maddie disappeared. What were her parents supposed to have been doing with her body until then with the police et al crawling all over the place?

Thinking about it, I imagine it is weak evidence that has prompted the 'deal' Why do a deal if you have enough evidence, or even any evidence to convict?
I've just heard the subject disucssed by the panel of 'Any Questions?' on radio 4. All of them, to a man, said they thought the McCanns were innocent while they had various comments, good and bad to make on the media coverage and other aspects of the case.
Hi amanda No one could possibly maintain that sort of pretence for this long. Kate McCann comes across as so genuinely distraught, an understatement, that it's wrong, I think, to challenge. Their Web site is so tacky and odd and bizarre, though, I think their PR attempts, eg the Pope, have antagonized people. But I'm doing what I disapprove of - cackling about it without knowing the facts.
As someone's whose opinions and intelect I admire it means a lot to me that you feel as I do Roth. At times on this subject I have felt in a minority of one! Like you I want to keep an open mind. But also like you, I feel I have been around long enough to spot genuine distress when I see it. I know that the media circus or aspects of it have annoyed people but I have tried to put myself in their position. I would grab anything offered, however tacky if I thought it might help!
Thanks amanda (but I'm not too bright!!) No one knows how any of us would react to possibly the worst thing that could happen to us, so I would forgive the Web site etc. Part of being suspects means they can't talk publicly about it, hence their relatives etc. The next ten days should be decisive, charged or not.
The wall to wall, non-stop news coverage is really quite ludicrous. And the BBC is leading this. Shame on the BBC. Disgraceful, and stupid. There is no fresh news. Repeat, there is no fresh news. Leave the McCanns alone. There is no justification for this coverage, other than feeding the morbid interests of illiterates Sun readers.
