Do R&J put their ignorance on, or are they really as uninformed as that? Jude didn't appear to know he was in Hancock's Half Hour, Rich didn't seem to know he'd started off in Rep... Poor old Bazza Cryer has to sit and humour these buffoons (sorry: serious journalists and researchers) every other month.

I also found Richard's TWICE repeated question about whether Williams would have approved of the show extremely fatuous. The show is an incredibly intrusive warts and all dramatisation based on diaries that he stipulated should only be published after his death, so to approve of the show he'd have to approve of being dead. Yet another brilliant question from the journalists' journalist there.

hi darl, sounds like kenny approved of the diaries being published after his death..... maybe he was too modest to appreciate that we'd like to watch a film/telly prog based on same.

Richard did mention he'd interviewed kenneth williams... think there was an obvious fondness in his tone.

i haven't interviewed mr williams (hee hee) so i can't comment further...

think rich n jude fit a lot into their show. kenneth williams was a genius imveryho, no doubt you agree... maybe the short amount of time given didn't do kenneth justice......

still luv the show tho Razz

Razz The big mistake was to waste time and not show a clip. Without the clip it was pure waffle.

Did Judy not really not know that Kenneth Williams was in Hancock?
I find that absolutely staggering, apart from their abysmal research.
Are there no checks to compensate for their, frankly, embarrassing gaffs?
Rather insulting actually to his memory.

I began to regard, later, Kenneth Williams as a one trick bore, actually, quite amusing and a stalwart of the Carry On capers, though.

Bloody edit, lack of!!!

To prevent, not "compensate"

"one-trick" not quite, I mean rather limited.

It was funny at the end when, after spending the whole hour being superior to Richard, Judy didn't know what onanism was when he mentioned that the Kenneth Williams' programme dwelt on it overmuch.

hi darl... you start a 'we want to edit our posts... at least within 10 mins' poll and i'll back you

as for your post... your knowledge of kenneth williams is greater than mine although i never tire of watching/listening to him (dad loved him on 'just a minute'/radio)

as for richard n judy's comments/research: i usually find them 'up to the job'. if they or their researchers have been remis in this case then hopefully they'll take it on board

Hi Beany - the Kenneth drama-doc is on BBC4 tonight at 9, then repeated at 12.40am, then many times after that I expect. Ninja

Richard told Jude there wasn't enough time to show the clip she interrupted him to try to introduce - then they yapped on anyway, without showing it. It was odd, and rather stupid.

I thought the 'one-man show' guy did a really good impression of Kenneth - and it looked better than the ham overacting in the clips shown before the show. I know it seems unlikely to overact Kenneth Williams - but from the looks of it, the guy manages it tonight. We'll see.

I greatly enjoyed todays show and especially the piece about Kenneth. I thought the bloke with Barry Cryer made a much better Kenneth then the bloke on the programme.

'Bloke with Barry Cryer' did a really good KW impression alright!!! Big Grin

Can't comment on the show yet, don't have BBC4. Hope the KW's 'show' is repeated on B1, 2 or 3 soon.

What a load of twaddle. I wonder if R&J are too testing for you. I suggest you might find Paul O'Grady on ITV more to your liking.

I wonder if Kenneth Williams would approve of Fantab. From the clips they showed it seemed OTT.

Rather ironic, when you consider that "Richard & Judy" is one hour-long evening bout of onanism.

Did anyone see the drama/doc?

I didn't realize it was on Beeb 4, and just caught the end of it Roll Eyes

Actually, I thought the actor made a really good job of it - it was very sad. I imagine Kenneth Williams would have loved and hated it both - his life became a tragedy, ennobled - and yet, as he said at the end 'what's the point?'

I suppose they'll repeat it really soon anyway, and I can see the bit with the navvies, which looked too OTT in the trailers. Maybe it worked in context.

Quite good, I thought.
The actor conveyed the bleakness and loneliness of William's life, he was alone most of the time, and there was very little joy in spite of his wide reading etc.
The Diaries show how well-read he was but this didn't, I thought, come through.
Funny voices apart, he didn't really do very much and seemed bored with the whole busines.
His social life seemed a bit meagre.
Should be on BBC2 soon.

Thanks Rothgar Smile

My mum had a theory that only ignorant people could be truly happy - the well read ended up knowing too much misery. And his roles - banal, and he had to pretend it was all jolly good fun, keep up the act. And the loneliness.

The only person who really loved him was his mum - and yet what did she know?

Just like me, and my mum (said the Prima Dona) Big Grin

Certainly a narrow, claustrophobic family set-up!
His father died? because he mistook Jeyes Fluid for cough mixture?
A bit bizarre - poor chap seemed unwanted after William's birth....

What is it?
