Good to see you back Cooly. Think you need an iphone to replace your cr*p computer, then you could lay in the bath wafting in the incense and have a go at the quiz. Re 1 it was tiler Re 4, it was sailor but clerk is even better Re 5 it was Roger Miller, he lived next door to Roger Baker to cut out the middleman

'Tinker, Tiler, Soldier, Spy....' - not sure where the miller and the baker fitted in Oh - and not sure what an Iphone is - does it exist? I want one!!

Not heard of iphone, Cooly, shame on you. Iphone with bluetooth and pink tongue is the latest offering from the gods of communication to help us fight off the unspeakable evils of silence.

Just wanted to say "Hi", Foinavon, if you're still dropping in these parts from time to time. Speaking of time: "Across the evening sky, all the birds are leaving..." And who knows where the time goes? Do you like Sandy Denny? And have you caught any of the Dylan "Theme Time Radio Hour" shows that have been broadcast on British Radio ?
Coolana, are you alright, gal? Miss you, and Diggy and Rothgar too.

Hi Sweet Marie, I do look in from time to time but the repeated zapping has just about killed it for me. Havent heard of Sandy Denny, so Ill try to look him ( or her) up and let you know if Ive anything sensible to say. In the meantime, hope this finds you in good health and spirits.

Hi Sweet Marie and foinavon Hope both well, good to see you posting. Rather Stalinist of late, do really hope coolana hasn't been purged or sent to the Gulags! Hi coolana

Hi Foinavon and Rothgar Glad you're okay. I don't know what's happened to Coolana, nor Diggy. I posted a "hello" a couple of times, but thought you'd all flown the nest Hence my reference to birds leaving, Foinavon. Sandy Denny was a folk singer and was with Fairport Convention for a time. Her song, "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" is really lovely. I had a great version once, on tape, but it's long gone and I'm trying to find it again.

Sweet Marie, are you still around ? There was a good programme on Victorian Industrialisation in Yorks/Lancs yesterday, well good except that David Dimbleby can be a bit irritating. Anyway, there was a bit on Titus Salt/Saltaire you might find interesting if you havent already seen it.
Talking of being irritating, I have watched a couple R&J's in the new series and Richard seems more irritating than ever. Or perhaps it's just me. Hope this finds you well.

Hi, has your posting name something to do with the "Grand National Horse Race"? Just interested..............
|

|

|
Foinavon is also the name of a mountain in Scotland; as well as the shock 100/1 winner of the 1967 Grand National............

Hello Foiny. You know, I was just thinking about you today, wondering how you were. Must be psychic, eh? No, I missed that programme, shame. I was glued to the tennis and after the final yesterday I turned the TV off. Maybe it'll be repeated. My computer might be on the blink, too. It keeps freezing and shutting itself down for no reason. Hope you're well. And yes, Richard does seem to get more irritating as time goes by, doesn't he? I've been watching the tennis anyway for the last two weeks.

Hi Sweet Marie, yes the tennis was excellent, I slobbed out in front of the TV for most of the day. Hope your computer hasnt got a virus, watch out if it starts to sneeze ! Computers can be so irritating, my favoured word at the moment.
Yes Jbabe and Cman, it was Foinavon the horse. As I remember the race a loose horse leading the field decided against jumping the fence and ran across it instead , blocking off the other horses. There was a right pile up, as the Irish commentator used to say, with horses crashing into a horses and a lot of jockeys dumped onto the ground. Those that found away through to the fence had lost momentum and couldnt jump it, sometimes trying to scramble across. But foinavon was a long way back - he wasn't a good horse- and by the time he got there the way had cleared a bit and he cleared the fence which, by then, was a lot easier to jump anyway as those crashing into it had taken lumps out.
I entered the R&J writing comp a few years ago and realised it would need a similar fluke for me to win, hence the name. But it would have needed a mich bigger fluke as there are only forty runners in the National but there were forty thousand runners for the R&J !
I didnt know there is a mountain called foinavon. Maybe the horse was named after it.

Hi Foinavon, the horse was named after the mountain. The Duchess of Westminster liked to name some of her horses after Scottish Hills/Mountains. She owned the greatest of them all, Arkle, who was also named after a mountain in Scotland. As she owned Foinavon when he was a young horse, she gave him the name. He wasn't very good but he did have a lot of luck on his side when he won the Grand National.
|
| |
|

|
Thanks Corkman. Foinavon sounds more like a river than a mountain, but doubtless you are right. Ben Nevis won the Grand National in 1980 but doesn't seem to have a connection with the Duchess.

Sweet Marie, there is a Bob Dylan programme coming up on 14th October showing some previously unrelaeased footage from his first concert. Don't miss it.
An ad for the latest must(not) have gismo -Ipod Nano- has a female sound track. At first I thought , oh dear it's that Swedish girl from saab, but apparantly its a Canadian singer called Feist.
In case you - or anyone else - needs a quiz question, what is this an advert for ?
" It's exhillerating and bracing efects on the body and brain are immediate. From the first and after each succeeding wineglassful, a delicious feeling of refreshment, renewed vigour.and an additional strength and stamina are experienced. But unlike drugs which merely stimulate for the moment , only to lower the vitality afterwards, the strength that ********* gives is lasting strength."
If only !

Thanks, Foiny. I'll be sure not to miss it if they show it on telly. A friend sent me a tape last year with some of that early footage from Newport, but the quality wasn't good, so I'll look forward to this. Isn't it going to be a big event at the National Film Theatre? But I guess you have to be "somebody" to get invited. Hmm, Diggy? (Luvvy kiss)

And as for the advert, don't know, but what is it? I want some now. Ah, the pub quiz, those were the days.

Re the advert, I was just browsing through a book called 'Enquire Within about Everything' - as you do- when I saw it. Published in 1911 ! Begins with W. Any ideas. Quite a time for His Bobness. Look forward to seeing the new film when it comes out, though probably you made the premiere in Cannes ?

PS, what is a luwy kiss ?

Hey, Foinavon, did you catch the new Transatlantic Sessions on BBC4 on Friday night? I've been looking for a tape/video/DVD of the series shown on BBC2 10 years back, with Emmylou Harris and Mary Black, but have never been able to find it. They always stuck in my mind. Why do we always get repeats of the rubbish stuff and not the quality?

Wincarnis (which is Latin for 'meat-wine') is a brand name of a British tonic wine, popular in Jamaica and some other former British colonies. It is a fortified wine (14%) made to a secret recipe of grape juice, malt extracts, herbs and spices, but it no longer contains meat. It tastes a bit like sweet sherry.
Wincarnis is now marketed as an aperitif wine. In Jamaica it is mixed with Guinness and milk. In Singapore, Malaysia and the Gulf it is taken by new mothers as a tonic. It is well known by older people in the UK who use it as "tonic" when not well. Ian McLeod Distilleries marketing offers the ingredients:
" Wincarnis Tonic Wine is a carefully formulated blend of enriched wine and malt extract with a unique infusion of selected therapeutic herbs and spices including gentian root, mugwort, angelica root, balm mint, fennel seed, coriander seed, peppermint leaves, cardamom seeds and cassia bark ....is a natural tonic incorporating herbs traditionally recognised for their ability to combat common ailments and alleviate their symptoms. It is rich in vitamins, especially energy-giving Vitamin B complex, and can h | |
