I know the cinema I work at will probably get it and that means there'll be a staff showing before it's released to the public. I'm so going to the staff showing, I seriously can't wait for this film.

I think I was the only person I knew who liked Cabin Fever, so I'm definitely looking forward to this. I've heard mixed reviews though, but it should at least be entertaining.

Cabin Fever was pretty good actually, in a retro-70's horrorfest kind of way. I'm certainly looking forward to Hostel, although it's a shame that Takashi Miike only has a small role in it though, it would have been rather amusing to have seen him torturing some American tourists with piano wire and acupuncture needles (a la Audition!).

I saw 'Hostel' recently... and I was pretty disappointed. The acting's pretty ropey throughout and you have to sit through a load of 'horny American backpackers try and get laid' type of stuff before you get to any horror action. When the horror comes, fans of extreme cinema will be left wanting more as it's all over a bit quick. Viewers looking for Miike shouldn't get their hopes up as he's only got about 3 lines and is probably on screen for less than a minute.

I nice central idea, but not properly explored... too much travelling and not enough torture!

Clue gives a good summary. Crap first half and the horror isn't as extreme as the trailers hinted at. Seemingly the forthcoming DVD release doesn't shy away like the theatrical release does.

Its a film without any actors or logical screenplay. Turn off your mind and just watch torture happen, thats the bottom line.

If they cut the first half down to around 15 minutes and left 1hr 15 minutes for the shock scenes which didnt require the (so called) actors acting, then you might have a film.

A letdown and cannot believe there is a sequel in the making.

I was actually quite impressed by it. It's not perfect by any means but it did something to me that I can't recall having happened when watching a horror film in a cinema (barring having to go for a stiff drink after seeing 'Switchblade Romance' when sitting in the front row!), I actually came out with my hands tembling slightly.

I usually don't get sucked into hype and advertising that much but with tis film it could'n't be avoided, there where adverts everywhere. It's amazing how many people think it was directed by Quentin Tatantinio and not Eli Roth due to the TV adverts. I think this was the problem. If it had been a rather lesser known, lesser hyped film it would have been more effective. It's obvious the director was influenced by recent Far Esaten cinema, especially 'Audition' as they both begin by attempting to decieve the audience into thinikng they are watching an non-horror film before switching into pure horror. Maybe this is why Takashi Miike crops up in cameo as a reference. 'Audition' did it much better though, but I would rather have a flawed modern American horror movie like 'Hostel' rather than the teen-horror that Hollywood still churns out.

I find it really strange when people have told me that they didn't find it scary at all. I usually tell them when they are on holiday you alway get at least one night when you've drunk to much and somehow made it back to you're hotel and room, but can't remember how you managed or how you got there in one piece. Anything could have happened in that 'blank spot', although I'm sure waking up hungover in some cell like room with somebody ready to torture you to death is unlikely.....but what if? Now that is scary. This is why my hands were trembling slightly after watching it, there has been many a night in a foriegn country, another town in England even where that's happened and thinking about it after watching this film now plays with your mind a little.

'Hostel' may not be a good film, but it's an effective one certainly.

A dreadful film not very scary at all i've had far more scary moments watching disney movies, effects were awfull, didn't feel anything for the characters in fact they were so annoying coudn't wait for them to be hacked up, and then that didn't happen . Please Eli don't claim to be the saviour of the horror film if you not going to make a good one (cabin fever wasn't very good either). Tarantino should have stayed away.

Hostel is not an extreme film at all. Calvaire (The Ordeal) is much more extreme, and that isn't really even that extreme a film.

Stuff like All Night Long 2&3 is more along the lines of extreme; or Irreversible.

Hostel is for kids.

I'm with Sly Fox on this. If I wanted to see ****ing, I'd hire porn. If I wanted to see torture, I'll find snuff. But I was after psychological torment and something to think about but all I got was a bunch of characterless jocks and brainless slappers. There was not one distinguisable personality in the whole script.
Hostel IS for kids (mainly teenage boys.)

The torture sucked and it was only on for like five minutes so that stretched out for an hour longer would make the film even worse

I watched it for the first time recently and i thought that it took ages to actually get into the story as the beginning appeared to be a soft-porn film!

Oh I agree

Its hard to make a film out of this crap. Give me Audition or Oldboy anyday, Roth should never be allowed to go near a film again.

And while on the subject of not letting anyone make a film, shoot the person who made Final Destination 3.

Ooooo I didn't rate this film at all. The beginning was very long winded and IMO needless. Once I got into it..It sort of skipped bits, like the first guy who goes missing and the girl..
There wasn't much in the way of gore either..The special effects weren't much kop and I really loathed the fact that I knew who the murderer was about 25 mins in..

Out of 10 I'd give it a 3.
