Hostel - an absolute boring film, this could've been way better, the plot was SO obvious, it is a no brainer film, and maybe they targetted people who just don't like to think when watching films, because honestly it is hella predictable. I had high expectations, nevermind.

'Hostel' was average at best. I can't believe that they are already prepping for a second one. Personally, I'm hoping for better things from the Rodriguez/Tarantino 'Grindhouse' project.

It was so rubbish that I had to comment twice about it.

Absolute shite. Some of the worst acting I've ever seen, even as bad as Paul Walker who is by far the worst person ever to attempt acting. Nearly called him an actor then!

the only thing i found remotely scary about this movie was the fact that these places probably exist. The characters were so unlikable that you could't care what happened to them.

Thoroughly dissapointed, I only rented it because of the hype and the fact that Tarrentino's name was attached. The cutting of the guys heels made me laugh.

Eli Roth based it on a web site that Harry knowles of all people pointed him to. The site basically allowed you to kill a person for a donation to the persons family.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

thought the asian girl was quite selfish to jump in front of the train when he'd gone to all that effort to save her! she could of gone for a side parting and been fine! the concept was fantastic the execution of the concept? quite middle of the road. those kids needed calling in for their tea

I recorded this off Sky with the intention of watching it all, but I did catch the last half hour and, judging by the comments here, it won't take much to fill in the first hour.
From what I saw the film wastes the great opportunities for atmosphere, with all those bleak run-down locations, and substitutes 'suspense' for yet another one of those totally over-the-top, intrusive musical scores. Thanks to the stupid music you were never able to forget that this wasn't just a stupid American conveyor belt movie for the dumb teen market. Therefore it was impossible to suspend disbelief over absolutely stupid notions such as someone who's just had their eye cut out remaining as fighting fit as a Charlie's Angel, and of such a secret society handing out nifty little business cards - that could be dropped and found by anyone at all.
The film was shot and directed like an action movie masquerading as horror - but I mean Steven Seagal straight-to-video, not Die Hard 1.
Overall, like a lot of the extreme independent movies made in the early 70's that were dubbed as angry responses to the Vietnam War, The finale of Hostel does indeed seem like a reaction to the Iraq war - but unfortunately I'm afraid as a propaganda piece, as it presents a relatively uncomplex situation as something that could only be 'solved' ie won, in a patriotic heroic fashion, by the Americans.

I'd reiterate what ClientFan said and also add that another huge problem with the film was that it was difficult to really involve yourself with the characters. In any good film you need to feel something for the characters otherwise it doesn't work: you don't care what happens to them which renders the film almost pointless. In Hostel I didn't care one way or another what happened to the characters, so long as whatever the outcome was it brought the film to an end quicker...
Hostel was a lot of gore with very little else. Nausea enducing yes; scary, tense, suspenseful, involving - no

I didn't think it was all that gory tbh

Am i the only one who thought Hostel and Cabin Fever were absolutely awful. I also think the Saw films are terrible too. The acting and the storys are just dreadful, i also didn't find them at all gory.

Saw Hostel recently and I thought it was the biggest pile of piss I've had to endure in a long time, and I've seen some crap. (War of the Worlds with Tom arsehead Cruise for a start). The acting was horrific, the characters completely soulless and stereotypical and it wasn't directed at all well really. I'm sorry, but the scene where the guy's escaping in the car and comes across the three people who put him there and he manages to run over ALL THREE of them! Toss. The only point of interest was the very short Miike Takashi cameo. Now there's a guy who knows how to do it right. And now I read there's a second in the making. Christ on a bike.

Totally agree, also the bit where the blonde guy is captured and tied up, it's meant to be a torture house but the killer kills him straight away, what's with that.

I couldn't agree more. Watched this for the first time last night, and how I stayed awake, I will never know.

Wow...can't believe this topic is still here. Anyways...I'm a Roth fan and I would defend both Hostel and Cabin Fever to the death, but then thats just my personal preference. In my opinion horror films like this that offer something new to the viewing public always have merit. That's why Saw was pretty good (once again imo) but 2 and 3 were uninteresting and the only hook was some big 'twist' that everyone waited around for. This is also the reason I'm a bit anxious about Hostel Part II as I've heard not so great things about it. Doesn't stop me having a huuuuge poster of it above my bed though. *Note: I'm not saying that I think all horror sequels are rubbish. Also, I'm lookin forward to the release of Captivity this week, can't wait to give that one a watch and any Stephen King fans here? Eli is directing Cell. Yay!

i LOVE steen king, the stand is the best book i ever read, in fact i now have to read it again just because i've thought about it. i dont know how i feel about captivity, i have a niggling feeling its gunna be a bit of a wannabe extreme film, but fall short either in the filming being a bit standard or the story line stopping just at the edge before extreme, but i'll give it a go, i'm a bit of a woos sometimes so it may be just right for me!! lol
