I just came in this thread to mention that one!

Big Grin

"Black Christmas", also from the 70's, with Margot Kidder, Olivia Hussey and John Saxon is another brilliantly frightening movie.

When my sister and I were little (7/8) we peeped around the door when my Dad was watching The Thing in time to see the bit with the dogs. I only got around to watching the rest of it when I was about 19 and thought it was a cracking film. My sis still hasn't seen it but then again she won't even watch Tremors because it's too scary !
Amercian Werewolf In London was another one that scared the crap out of me when I was kid. I think it's an ace film now.

Seeing Event Horizon in the cinema made me jump loads. The tension and the white-faced ghosty woman were the main freaking out bits. Seeing it on vid/dvd totally nullifies the scariness.

The end of A Ma Soeur shocked the hell out of me. The rest of the film was so normal but ending just stunned me. Had to have the light on for a while after that and couldn't get it out of my head.

I would agree that Ring has a very scary climax. The Eye also has one of the scariest beginnings ever (if you see it at the movies!)

Other films aren't scary because they make you jump, but because they're disturbing. I'd put The Exorcist, The Brood, Repulsion and Deliverance in that category.

Zombie films in general give me the heeby geebies. I love Shaun of the Dead and Resident Evil films though.

I watched The Grudge last night and one part in particular made me hide behind my hands but in general a pretty rubbish film.

And Saw scared me the first time I watched it. But I watched it again the other night and I was fine. Big Grin

The only horror film which affected me to the extent of being scared after it had finished was The Fog (original) I was quite young at the time LOL

Audition and Cannibal Holocaust really disturbed me. I had sleepless nights over those.

The Descent made me slightly tense! It must be a good film/a powerful film! I am never scared at horror films. When I was a teenager I was almost scared at watching Polanski's film: Repulsion. I don't think today I would be affected.

How could I forget the most scary film without blood, without sex, without violence. A Dutch film remade by the US: THE VANISHING. The shell shock of the ending affected me for days. I kept telling myself "It is a film only"! The ending of the American version is a joke! Must have been inspiered by Walt Disney.

Not many films scare me but the Descent spooked me out for a few nights. I just kept imagining the crawler beside my bed. Urgh.

I saw a film last Christmas on BBC Four called 'A Warning to the Curious' based on a story by M.R. James, it was made in the early 70's but but has stuck in my memeory ever since. It's basically about a amateur archeologist who digs were he shouldn't to find a ancient crown only to find himself stalked by a malevolent ghostly figure. The scene where he is walking through the fields convinced he is being followed is creepy as hell, and later on he is awoken by a sound in the darkness of his bedroom at night and decides to switch on his light to investigate.......a couple sleepless nights for me there!
I've just ordered it on DVD through Amazon marketplace along with The Changeling, both for just under £14.

The Entity... The only film that still scares me now as an adult

---------------------------------------------------

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.
