This forum could be so useful, especially for people travelling to places they haven't been before. Why is it so little used? I have just had a day in Tunis (cruise) and although I didn't get off the ship, my friends did and paid 100 Euro's for a ten minute taxi ride to a market. (and I thought Tunisia was supposed to be a poor country) Originally the taxi driver demanded 125 Euro's so they did do a bit of bargaining but still I would have thought 10 to 15 Euro's would have been plenty. Whats your experiences/advice with regard to North African countries and getting value for money. I have, recently considered package hols in Tunisia but this has put me off.

Did a pacakge in Tunisia a while ago and it was good value - one week tour and one week beach.

Egypt is a fantastic country too, one that I'd really recommend. So much to do and see, really nice people, good food, good weather - can't ask for much more for a hol Smile.

if people are seriously dumb enough to pay that much for a taxi, they probably shouldn't be let into other countries without accompaniment!

Maybe they thought it was good value? When they told , they weren't complaining they just stated the fact. It was me that said "Whaaaat?"

It's a good idea to acquaint yourself before visiting somewhere on the exchange rate, sounds like they didn't really think about what they were being charged at the time.

Never been to Tunisia myself, it's not somewhere that has particularly appealed to me, so reviews would be great.

And yes, I wish this forum got more interest too, I tend to go to places that review all sorts of consumer interest things and then go to travel sections.

Ah...Thank you, at last someone's took my point. What I was trying to say was that if my friends had read about the Tunisia taxi's on a forum such as this, before their arrival they would have been better prepared to either get a better deal or look for an alternative. This could be a great forum for anyone visiting a place for the first time to pick up some good value tips from forummers with local knowledge. But it just seems to me that this particular forum is not used to best advantage when you think of the heights of usefulness it could achieve Wink

Probably because the C4 forums try and cover all the ground and it's not the first place you would look for travel advice. There are much busier travel forums out there.

Only been to Egypt and taxi haggling became a chore I could have done without - on one occasion it took us 20 minutes to agree a price. We were told by a rep what the cost of a cab should be to the hotel from Sharm, but the drivers always started off with a price 3 or 4 times this amount.

i completely agree - this place is really underused when it could be a goldmine of pre-trip information (without the travel agent bias). in fact, i'm just about to post asking for tips on vegas.

however, common sense really should prevail! and paying more than you would pay for a taxi in england seems a little silly!

I wouldn't let that incident put you off. Tunisia is a great place to visit for package holidays or more of an independent holiday with so much history to explore including many roman ruins, wonderful beaches, many great cities to visit, 5 star golf courses, water sports, I would recommend Tunisia to anyone. Take a look at my site, there is lots of information and travel guides about almost all locations in Tunisia so please enjoy my website.

A great place for both reviews and travel forums is holiday truths, just google it. Reviews on all sorts of resorts and hotels etc. but also forums where you can ask all sorts of questions. Also trip advisor. Great sites.
