Getting married in Sorrneto in a few weeks time, an have decided to see as much of Rome as we can in one day (woefully inadequate we know but the best we can do this visit, and we'll return to see it properly another time).
So... we'll arrive at the main train station (stazione termini?) and want to see the following things:
Definately the Colluseum
The best bits of the Palatine
Make a wish at the Trevi fountain
A few photos on the Spanish Steps
Highlights of the Vatican
Is this realistic? Should we aim to walk round or get bus / train / tram? Where / when should we stop for lunch? Anything else we should really try to cram in? Any top tips for a lunch / beer stop?

I wasn't well when I visited Rome so my memory is a bit hazy, and so also don't have much to recommend on food etc . But I seem to recall doing this lot and more in a couple of days at an easy pace and I did them all on foot.

You should be able to do them in a day. The Spanish Steps is basically a photo op and so won't be time consuming, though the others require more time.

My tip would be to get there as early as you can and go to one of the big sites like St Peters Square, to avoid some of the crowds.

You can most definitely do all that in one day!

Try Campo dei Fiori for lunch...cute, easy to find, not *too* touristy but enough to maintain a good service/price standard. A busy market during the day, buzzing with (mainly) locals around the pubs, bars and restaurants in the evening.Reasonably central, too.

*If pizza is your thing try "Dar Poeta" in Trastevere or "Remo" in Testaccio.

**If you've got time to spare you might want to visit piazza Navona as well.

You may be out of luck with the Vatican museum. The wait can be hours just to get in. In the summer there can also be a long wait to get into the Colluseum.To make the most of your time i would use taxi's to get around, or the underground.

If you're limited to this much time, the best thing to do to make sure you see the major sights is to undertake an organised tour, or at least plan meticulously yourself where you want to go.

The Pantheon, Forum and Colliseum are obvious certainties to visit, and are all in fairly close proximity to Termini.

Stop off in Piazza Navona for a coffee, this is possibly the most beautiful square in the country.

My favourite trattoria in Rome is Pommidoro on Piazza dei sanniti, close also to Termini. It is family run, reasonably priced and allows lovely views if you sit out on the open veranda.

This should help, but the best advice I can give is to re visit this beautiful city and give it a few days to really do it justice!

I had one day last summer and managed to get quite a lot in, get a simple map and like S_P said planning means you can do more.

I did have to be dragged on the plane home though. Rome is the best city in the world.

Did you get married yet? If not, when you visit Rome get a day ticket (includes buses and metro) which costs about 5 Euro's and a map of the bus and metro routes. With that you can definitely see most of the sights you mention. Avoid museums and the likes of the cistine chapel as queues will hold you back too much. Try and do the Pantheon and the trevi fountain one after the other as they are quite close together. The restaurants around that area can be quite expensive but a few years ago we found a great Chinese just a two minute walk away from the trevi and it was still going strong last August where we had a great lunch with wine and liquers for about 12 Euro's each. I don't know the street name but its adjacent the Police station and immediately opposite a nightclub called "Pigalle's" Use the metro when crossing the city centre and buses for the rest.
The coloseum and the forum and Palantine Hill(centre of ancient Rome) are adjacent each other and are a must, even on a flying visit but going inside the coloseum can take a while and I was a little disappointed. I suppose it didn't quite live up to the pictures and virtual reconstructions. However, you can make a decision when your there based on the size of the queues. there is a nice little piazza called the piazza de navona lovely fountain and a few places to eat away from the hubub of the centre, not exactly sure where it was but a local map would tell you

make sure you get up REAAAALLY early. go to vatican first and be there before it opens so you're at the head of the line.
then colosseum, then once you've done those first you've skipped the lines. after that you should be ok to wander around as the rest are in open spaces.
we just did rome in a week and still feel that we missed some!!
then again throw a coin in the trevi fountain and apparently you'll be going back again anyway!!

oh and also you can get a daily met ticket which is really cheap only a couple of euro - there is a stop at the vatican, the colosseum, the spanish steps etc...leave from termini station which is right in the centre of the city near hotels etc. it's easy enough to walk the whole city but if you're looking to save time it would help...
