has anybody here been to marrakech, just wondering if you've got any good tips or ideas, what to visit etc? Also, is it a safe place for three 18 year old women to travel to alone?
I went to Marrakech in July 2002 and absolutely loved it.
Before we went (two single women) I asked 3 people at work what they thought and they said they couldn't stand all the harrassment.
However we had absolutely no problems at all. Moroccans are certainly very chatty and I defy you to come home without being persuaded to buy a carpet (!) but it is not a dangerous place.
The Tourist Police are come down quite heavily on locals pestering tourists, as so much of the country's income comes from tourism so I think things have improved since my colleagues were there.
I found it a wonderful place to visit, loved the food, liked the people and was very sad to leave.
Do go to the main square (I won't even attempt to spell it) after dusk. It is great fun.
Do go to the gardens designed by Yves St Laurent.
Try to get to Essouera (about 3 hours by road) it is a lovely little place by the sea.
Don't read the 'Dangers & annoyances' chapter of the Lonely Planet Guide becasue it just goes way over the top.
if anyone was trying to sell me something I didn't want It just hid behind my wraparound sunglasses and pretende to be deaf!
my inlaws are moroccan and yes it is a very safe place for any woman............my daughter spent a year there before she started work.....in the north of morocco.............
