Yesterday we went to Covent Garden. We did not take the car because of the congestion charge. From Hammersmith to Covent Garden we paid £9.50 return for two of us. Isn't the congestion charge cheaper?

The congestion charge is £8 but then you'd obviously have to park the car somewhere, and that can be really expensive -we 've paid up to £20 for a couple of hours. Using an oyster card instead of buying individual tickets can be cheaper. A single fare using an oyster card is £1.50 as opposed to £3 without.
But to answer your question, yes it is a complete rip off!
If you are 3 or 4 in the car, it is worth while paying the congestion charge. At 5 o'clock you can pay £2 for an hour at the park meter; after 6 there is no charge. Well in Hammersmith.
I suppose it is better value if you're sharing a car when it comes to paying the congestion charge, but in terms of parking I was referring to central london i.e. covent garden/soho etc. I live in Islington and even there it can be really expensive if you don't have a resident permit.
I did not know it was Beaumarchais who said that! Me, I have always been saying that it is not necessary to know politics to argue about it!! It must be a very French attitude! A colleague of mine did not want to talk about a political event because I did notknow enought about it!!!!!!!!!!
Lol, well I just happened upon it and as I frequent forums such as the News forum it seemed appropriate as so many seem to think you don't deserve an opinion unless you are an expert!
My boyfriend works in the city, so he's learnt how to get around (taken him 8 years mind you!).

i think the tube is pretty good, to get from my town to my nearest city (about 7 miles) is about £6.50 return!!! Thats a rip off. An all day tube fare is only like £4!
All day tube fare is £6.70 at the moment off-peak, nearly twice that peak
The underground is a massive rip-off. As someone who's commuted for a year up to London, I would say it's very expensive for the service you get: I can count on one hand the number of times there were no delays
Walking round London is fairly easy if you've got a good map, or know where you're going. I tend to jump on the tube though
