Hey everyone,
I going to New York for 2 weeks by myself in july and i'm a little aprehensive. I'm an 18 year old girl. I've been to NY twice before but i was much younger.

If anyone has been and has any tips i'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Good for you Piper, always good to hear about another person travelling solo.

Are you doing a tour or anything or just hostelling?

Two weeks is quite a while if you're just based in NY so for a few day trips out of the city you might want to try a day trip to Niagra or possibly the hamptons for something a bit different.

Make sure you try 'The worlds favourite desert company' around east 50th I believe, really great cheesecakes and awesome tiramisu.

Smile

I know, i'm gonna stock up on dollars asap. But i don't know how much to get in dollars and how much in travellers cheques. I've never used travellers cheques before, so how much would you guys advise?

In an earlier post I was thinking of going to San Francisco. But now I'm going to Boston next week, on my own and using hostels as it's so much cheaper. I agree with Micky though, when I tell people I'm going on my own people think how strange. Whats with that? I mean if I want to go on holiday, I'll go.

Anyway all the best in NYC Piper.

up to you really. but i'm changing up £1000 into $200 cash and the rest cheques (they're very easy to change up) and the notes will include some small ones for tipping
travellers cheques are insured, if ya lose ya cash ya stuffed, and i don't wanna risk that while travelling alone

yeah right, some people think i'm mad, others think i'm brave. but here's how i see it~ you can spend ya life waiting around for someone to go with and end up regretting never going, or you say fk it, and just go! there's a nice big world out there waiting for us to see it and if ya young and got the money.. go for it!

and well done you fo having the courage to go alone too, have a great time in boston and make sure post here when u get home!

Good on you, Piper, and I hope you have a great time!!! Smile

I'm going with pals in August and we are going to try out the NY Greeter system where a local comes and meets you and shows you around their city. It's FREE!!!! Try an internet search for I think it's Big Apple Greeter or something like that. I know you've been before, but it might make interesting company for a day and you would go off the beaten track without the trepidation of going alone.

You guys are so lucky. I would love to just decide to go on holiday on my own but my parents won't let me. I either go with a group of friends or I book through one of this solo holidays. I wanted to do a contiki tour but i wasn't sure about it. Anyway, enjoy

if you want to take the ferry to liberty island it's a lovely trip - but expect a 4hr queue to get up the statue.

empire state also breathtaking but i got a nosebleed both times i went up, maybe i'm no good with sudden altitude change!

Don't put much into travellers cheques. Use the holes in the walls

When u go to new york, trust me, u will absolutely LOVE it! (I did!) I think u shud try to vist all the obvious sights like statue of liberty and empire state building, but also other places like ground zero and all the big department stores like macys, bloomingdales and saks. get a NY guide as it is uite big, buy a week-fare for the subway, go to times square particularly at nite, go to hersheys - the chocolate store and the massive and i meant massive virgin megastore as well. the list probably goes on even more so i wud probably say go and get a good travel guide and possibly do some rearch like on the internet or something and most of all.... ENJOY YOUR VISIT TO THE CITY THAT TNEVER SLEEPS (it never does actually!)
