I use National Rail Enquiries. The prices don't seem to vary between there and the train operator websites.
Tickets are generally on sale 12 weeks before travel date and that's when they are at their cheapest, usually.
In the past when there has been a group of us trying to travel somewhere we have found it easier to do it over the phone - although all the rail services from my local station are Virgin and their call centres are in India so not sure how effective that route would be now. I have had some very good help from people trying to find us the cheapest alternative when we thought it was going to cost us a fortune.

I think they are all pretty much the same pricewise - sometimes the newspapers have tokens which you can collect in order to get discounts of train tkts so they are worth lookin out for in order to bag a bargain. You can register with the train ticketing cos online and they will let you know when the tkts go on sale for your particular date of travel and that way you can get in straight away and get the cheaper tkts. personally I prefer to book on line cos then I can fish around myself and see which days/times are the cheapest if flexibility is not a problem. good luck
