I went there 4 years ago and I wouldn't recommend going alone, I went there with my parents when I was 17 and I did find it quite scary, lots of homeless people and just an unsafe feeling. Don't let it put you off though, just make sure that you study the dangerous and safe areas and stay in the hotel at night. We stayed at the Handerley Union Square which I think is a dodgy place anyway!
Great things to see there, Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge and a ride on a cable cart is worth it!
I'd recommend possibly staying by Fisherman's Wharf.
Also depends on what kind of person you are aswell, if you are independant then you should be OK, just I'm not really! I'd also say that it's just like any other city too, so make sure you take the same precautions as you would if you were in LA or New York.

You're having a laugh!! I've been to New York and Nairobi on my own and I'm sure there can be nowhere more daunting than those two places! Depending on what you're looking for, staying near Union square would be an idea for shopping, Soma for bars and restaurants etc. Get yourself a guide book and just go, travelling solo is both rewarding and an eye opener. Both me and my partner travel together and also seperately, once you do it you'll be hooked! Oh, and don't even think about 'staying in the hotel at night'.

Mikey to Rex "oh I would've nominated you twice if I could have Rex..." Best quote of the series.
