I think he thought that was more interesting than Eastbourne proper.

yeah my sis in law works there - someone turned up with a salad bottle stuck where the sun don't shine the other night - that alone makes it more interesting than anywhere else in town... Razz

Any beach in Devon and Cornwall is beautiful, loads places to go. Newquay is great for nightlife and fistral beach is Europe's premiere surfing destination. Padstow (a harbour not a beach) is a great place to visit, you can check out the millionaire cruise boats, Rock is a great place, very posh and expensive though. Loads and loads of places, depends what you want.

Rye is arguably the prettiest town in the country. Lots of old houses and pubs with the feel of a smuggler's den, some good history and lovely views of the sea and surrounding marshes.

If it's full, I'd recommend staying in nearby Winchelsea - if you can find a B&B, that's the most relaxing place (cas there's nothing there, except even older houses!).

Have to agree Whitby, RobinHoods Bay area is lovely.
Northumberland is much overlooked and has some great beaches. I'd also consider Kielder Water/Forest area, spectacular scenery and feels very remote.

Cool Thanks guys some great ideas! In the process of researching again for a short break at the seaside, although having a nightmare - don't want to stay in a grubby little B&B but the decent hotels charge as much for a summer weekend as a week abroad! It's driving me Mad anyone got any suggestions? Wink

Great Yarmouth, Norfolk is nice and erm, breezy! Snowman

But seriously, you can't beat Jersey. Gorgeous beaches and cliff top walks, and history thrown in!

And objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are.

Ok you guys are really twisting my arm about Jersey, but I like to have a car-free holiday! Any nice beaches/areas near the ferry port/airport that are reach-able by public transport? Ta! Razz

Weymouth is lovely, has a nice long beach, lots of attractions if you have kiddies, a nice town centre, ferries over to Guernsey & is reasonably easy to get around. Portland is a bit deserted.

Don't do Bournemouth or Poole - they are snotty & crap, Paignton & Torquay are good for a week and don't really know about Cornwall. St ives & Newquay look nice.

Why is there a light in the fridge and not in the freezer ?

St. Ives is lovely. Very busy in summer though and wouldn't recommend driving through the town. Best way is to drive to Lelant and take the train from there directly into St. Ives (train takes about 10 mins).

I to was gonna suggest Whitby, Staithes and RObinhods' Bay (and there is alwasy Goathland for the Heartbeat fans (aka Aidensfield) with its Railway and wnderful yorkshire moorsclose by). Bamburgh, Seahouses and Lindisfarne (Holy island) on the Northumberland Coast are also worthy of a visit.

I entirely agree about Cornwall, Penzance, Isle of Man and the Yorkshire coast. Can I just add to the list Southwold as it is on my doorstep almost. I visited yesterday on the bank holiday and it was packed with people so the secret is out. It is very difficult to get parking and is expensive. The Suffolk coast is a nature reserve and is beautiful just watch your step as it is falling into the sea quickly. You will not come across the joys of Norfolk and Suffolk easily as its not very accessible by road and you do not pass through it on the way to anywhere.
