We do the med at least twice a year. I hate long haul flights so we always go back to the Med. Even though we visit the same ports time and again we always find something different to do and see, catching local transport to places of interest. For example we have done Naples about seven times, along with Pompei and Herculaneum so this time we caught a local train, (3 euro's for a day ticket) and went to Ercolano (Herculaneum) and found the town itself (as opposed to the ancient ruins) was really colourful, with local markets and fantastic little bars and restaurants. And then of course you return to your five star accommodation aboard ship. I would recommend Med cruising to any one, irrespective of age.

In Italy public transport is heavily subsidised. Most italian cities have similar deals that include buses and local trains. Most tobaccanists in Italy sell bus and train tickets but you cannot buy tickets on a bus. Inter City trains will sell tickets on trains but it is really expensive. i.e. I jumped on a train without buying my ticket which would have been eight Euro's. On the train I was charged 43 Euro's. Taxi's can be a rip off as well but you're usually OK if you ask the price before setting off. I was charged 30 euro's for a three kilometer ride. I could have walked it in 20 mins.
If you want to start your cruise from Venice look at "MSC Cruises" We did one last October on the "Armonia" and it was a terrific ship with good mixture of Nationalities including Italian (Its an Italian owned line) English, French, Dutch German, Spanish and many more. Many cruise lines also start from Genoa and We've done a couple from Palma in Majorca (Ocean Cruises and Island Cruises to name but two)

Royal carribean are an American owned line and tend to be more expensive to Brits. they also cater mainly to US tastes i.e loads of hamburger buffets, bottled beers, etc. at least two thirds of the passengers will probably be Yanks who even beat the Germans to the sun beds. Have a look at my previous post for some alternatives that I have tried personally and can thoroughly recommend.
Going on my first cruise ever in 2 weeks time. it's an R.C. cruise, Mexico,( Mazatlan, Cabo San Lucas, etc. Anyone been on this one or any R.C. cruises? The ship is Vision of the seas. What about Mexican currency? should we just take $ or what. We are going from there to Vegas so will need $ anyway. Are the offshore trips good, any recomendations about anything would be great. Black people are great dancers. patpot.
I've been on two R.C. cruises. It was OK, but when I went there were a lot of German people and one of them shouted at me when I asked them what the time was
Apparently one company wanted fat people to test how much weight their ship would hold. I bet all the places are taken now anyway, you don't get many fat people on a boat.
The Americans got all the places! Just back from my 1st cruise, one American at our table insisted on chocolate cake, there was none on the menu that night. He said to the waiter 'what no chocolate cake' how the hell do you expect us to get fat? The waiter somehow managed to find some, and then he said he didn't want it. Some people (I had his chocolate cake) just to help the waiter out you understand. PS, Im still not fat, well not as fat as the Americans.
On the topic of cruises (and I hope this isn't too far off thread)have any single people here gone on a cruise? If so how did you find it? ie were you made welcome or did you feel the odd one out. I have often fancied a cruise but don't have anyone to go with.
Hi Guppy, on the cruise that I've just been on I didn't notice any single people at all. Most were with partners/families/friends. A friend of mine (a female, late 50s) went on one on her own. She was hit on/pursued by some of the male crew,(unwanted attention you understand). She did in fact meet up with another f. on the cruise and had a great time. She now cruises with this new friend of hers. If you really fancy a cruise, why don't you try a short one to begin with.
