I wonder as many must, if you had been given the option instead of holding those books out at arms length for a full forty minutes or receiving to strokes of the cane on your non writing hand - which would you have chosen?

Would Vicki have prefered that to spendong all that ime in detentiopn?

On two occasions I remember boys being given a choice of Corporal punishment or an alternative. In both cases they choose the alternitive. In the first case two boys were given the choice between a spanking or a cold bath, they both took the cold bath after school lessons that afternoon. The second case was my best friend who had the choice between a spanking or waking up the headmaster at 6-30 every morning for a week. He was a day-boy who lived a five minutes bike ride from the school and chose the early call! I would point out that the head's spankings were not all that terrible (when he said spanking he meant just that, a hand spanking, not the slipper which was always given in private in his study). He could hit hard but it was never more than three strokes and was nothing a 13-14 year old could not easily take without flinching. Certainly the spanking would have been much less unpleasent than a cold bath, I think perhaps the fact that the cp would be in front of the class is what put them off taking what would have been the quicker and easier option.
