Not so long ago a teacher could act in 'loco
parentis;' for reasonable correction.

I think your law books might be out of date. Corporal punishment in fee-paying schools was made illegal by the present govt. I can't remember when - some time after 1997.

Corporal punishment in Isle of Man schools is still legal - they have their own parliament.

We must remember yhis is NOT a school, so those laws do not apply. This may just need a contract between tghe TV companies and the parents.

That easy

the schools i went to gave the slipper and once you became a teenager it was the cane.the slipper was almost used daily the cane not as much.most of us were smacked fairly regularly for little crimes such as being late/handing in bad prep/being sent out of class etc. i just feel that in todays climate they should bring back the cane (slipper etc.)for kids that bully, steal vandalise this would be a great deterant and better than for the silly little things that i used to get a smacked bottom for.

I did once know the exact date but I've forgotten now. I think you are about right but the law banning Corporal punishment was for state schools only at first - it was not banned in independant schools until much more recently in the late 1990s.

I have enjoyed TTE and its a bit depressing I think that this old chestnut about corporal punishment being the solution to our society's ills is still out there.

I was at an all-boys school in the 70s where the cane was used reasonably frequently and the debate over its use was a classic for debate. In fact, it must have come up as our annual debate every year or so. I was usually in the majority (probably 60-40) in favour of keeping it - as our school was pretty fair and I appreciated that it made for a tight ship.

However in the modern context, I find it frustrating that in Daily Express land, there would be no youth crime if delinquents were subject to the birch (I think there is less demand for return of the cane in schools). I say it is frustrating because it lulls us into a sense that modern life is all rubbish and if we just went back a bit (eg corporal punishment of young offenders) then one major modern concern, crime, would fall. The problem with this view is that because its reintroduction does not happen (I don't think any political parties advocate it) then we are left stuck in our rut.

A bit like TTE, I am sure that in our regulated world we could take 100 juvenile offenders due custodial sentences. Put 50 of them in gaol and birch the other 50. According to the Daily Express view, the birched 50 are less likely to re-offend. Of course the irony is that the birched 50 would be out on the streets much quicker than the incarcerated ones. In other words, we could tell within, what a year, whether birching had any significant impact on re-offending rates. My own view is that it would not. Then we could finally put this one to bed and focus on what would work because these older methods don't. Likewise, if the birched young men's behaviour altered significantly then I would eat my words and be happy to go down that route.

However, I do think we need to move on and lance this particular boil.
