David Coulthard has spoken up for the ability of his outgoing Red Bull team-mate Christian Klien, who will be replaced in the Milton Keynes-based squad’s 2007 line-up by Mark Webber.
Klien was told earlier this month that he will not be part of either of Red Bull’s Formula 1 teams next year.
The news came as a shock to the 23-year-old Austrian, whose career has been guided by the energy-drink company since its formative stages.
Although he is likely to remain a Red Bull-backed driver, Klien will have to ply his trade in Champ Cars or the DTM and his brief F1 career seems to be over.
Coulthard believes Klien has been unable to show his true potential because he was thrust into F1 at too young an age.
“Obviously I feel for Christian because he has been unfortunate this year,” said the Scot.
“I think he has good speed and he’s still very young.
“People have to remember than when you start at 19 or 20 and you’re put in the spotlight with that pressure, you are still a young man, probably still living at home with your parents.
“We all can remember the transition we go through when we start to stand on our own two feet.
“My opinion is that he’s been rushed through too quickly and therefore he hasn’t had the chance to show his talent.
“Therefore his period with Red Bull Racing has come to an end too quickly and that makes it difficult for him to find a drive elsewhere in Formula 1.
“And that is Formula 1’s loss because he drives well and his feedback is good.”
Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko visited the Denver Champ Car race earlier this month to discuss Klien’s future with the series’ co-owner Kevin Kalkhoven.
Marko has told Klien that he may get an opportunity to return to F1 in the future if he proves himself in the US-based championship.
