What year of the 1950s is this supposed to be set? i was wondering about the contraband chocolate. Surely that was availble in the 1950s even if it was on rationing in the early part of the decade.

Chocalte was, of course, around in 1950s however that doesn't mean it was allowed in schools. When i left my school last year it was still forbidden to bring in any food other that a drink.

Yes. Of course there was chocolate in the 50s, and, come to that, in the 40,s during the war but it was strictly rationed. I was at school in the forties in an independant school and there were no restrictions on what the boys (all boys' school!) ate that they bought for themselves. However, I was a day-boy and I don't know whether or not the boarders were allowed to keep food in the dormitory.

I think they were just allowed to write letters. That seems like the only communication between home and school.
